Constitution Day

Today we celebrated Constitution Day by discussing some of the parts of the U.S. Constitution.  We read We The Kids which helped to put the Preamble into perspective for young children.  We also worked together to write a class constitution.  A big discussion we had was the difference of rights and responsibilities.   This is something we will continue to discuss throughout the year.
In honor of a citizen's right to vote, we also voted on a name for our Envision Math frog.  The final name choices are Lola and Bob.

Lola or Bob

Writing "Kick Off" Celebration

Since we started second grade, we have been getting ready to become writers in 212!  Our first writing unit will be personal narrative, but we couldn't start without a few key things.  The students helped me make a list of writing supplies we would need.  Then, we started by telling stories that have happened to us.  Students decorated their writing folders to make them special.  On Friday, we had a folder fashion show and even started writing.  Here are some pictures from our writing "kick-off" lessons. I can't wait to start reading their work!

First Math Lesson

We started our first math topic today, Understanding Addition and Subtraction.  Students listened to an interactive story, discussed new math vocabulary, and played a game to practice addition.  You should see the game and math words come home this afternoon.  Feel free to play at home!

First Days of Second Grade

We have had a great first 2 days of school in 212!  Students have been exploring the classroom, learning new routines, and getting used to the new responsibilities of being a second grader.  Thank you for returning the paperwork so quickly!  If you haven't returned the school forms yet, please try to as soon as possible.  Here are some pictures of our first days and he stories we have read so far!  Thank you for following my blog!
