Monster Writing

Our monster writing activity was a huge success.  I was amazed at how well they came out.  These monsters are displayed in the hallway to the cafeteria.  If you are in the building, definitely go take a peek!  Here are some pictures of our monster display.

Our Francis Wyman Halloween parade will be taking place on Thursday October 31st at 1:55 pm.  All parents are welcome to come view the parade in the gym.  We hope to see you there!
If you are willing to volunteer, I may need some help getting costumes on in the classroom.  Please email or call me if you are available to help out in the room @1:35 pm.  Thanks!

Monster Making

On Friday, we started our first creative writing activity.  Before we could start writing, the students had to design a monster.  By rolling a die, the student found out how to design the body, eyes, nose, mouth, arms, legs, and hair.  Once we finished the design process, students had to start brainstorming ideas about their monster.  What is his or her name, where does your monster live, what does he or she eat, etc...
Here are some pictures from the design process.  Can't wait to see the finished product!

Pumpkin Science

Today our class had a special visit from Mr. Mussleman.  He brought with him a pumpkin from the Science Center.  With that one pumpkin, we learned many pumpkin facts and got to watch many different experiments.
1. We learned about the parts of a pumpkin/ plant.

2. We learned that a pumpkin floats because it is hollow on the inside, which makes it buoyant.

3.  We learned about the fire triangle by making a Jack-0-Lantern. There are three things needed in order to make a fire : Fuel, Oxygen, and Heat.

4. We learned about chemical reactions with a surprising trick from Mr. Mussleman.  Check out the video here:

More Trees!

Last week, we learned about the parts of the tree and examined objects from the trees in your yards and neighborhoods.  This week, Ms. Pavlicek came to take us on a tree walk around Francis Wyman.  We also began to examine what happens inside of the tree.  We used a really cool "Tree cookie" from the science center to help us figure out the layers and rings inside the tree.  Our friend Rishabh helped to act out the layers inside the tree and what happens with the change of season. Next week, we will get to make our own "Tree Cookie" necklaces.  A big thank to the Burlington Science Center for all their support in helping make science real and FUN!
