More Trees!

Last week, we learned about the parts of the tree and examined objects from the trees in your yards and neighborhoods.  This week, Ms. Pavlicek came to take us on a tree walk around Francis Wyman.  We also began to examine what happens inside of the tree.  We used a really cool "Tree cookie" from the science center to help us figure out the layers and rings inside the tree.  Our friend Rishabh helped to act out the layers inside the tree and what happens with the change of season. Next week, we will get to make our own "Tree Cookie" necklaces.  A big thank to the Burlington Science Center for all their support in helping make science real and FUN!

Learning about TREES

We are having a great time learning all about trees.  This class is very interested in trees this year.  So far, we have chosen a tree in the playground to observe throughout the four seasons.  We have started exploring the materials from trees that cam from your back yard.  We learned all about "Terrific Trees" from Pierre the Acorn.  Here are some pictures of our explorations so far.

212 is a Family

One of the things we have been working on in class is our Family board.  We have discussed the word family and what it means to us.  We promised to treat each other like family this year. Here is what our final bulletin board looks like.  We have made it a game at Open House.  We challenge you to guess which "mini me" is your child. Good luck!

Second Grade Book List

Here is one list (by level) that may help you to find a "Just Right" book for your second grader.
My reading class's "Just right" level should be I-K.  J is level most of them are reading with me currently, so K will be a challenge and anything lower than H will be too easy.

Back to School Night

Back to School night is TOMORROW!  Parents of students grade K-2 are invited to come to school tomorrow night, Tuesday September 17, 2013.  Mrs. Astone will be addressing parents in the auditorium at 6 o'clock.  There will be a second grade presentation for parents followed by classroom visits.  Please come to see what your child's day is like and even get a peek at some of the work done already in second grade.  I hope to see you all tomorrow night.
Be sure to follow the prinicpal's blog to find important dates and information about the school.  The school bulletin can also be found here.   http://franciswymanschool.blogspot.com/

First Day of School!

We had a fabulous first day of school! I have a feeling we are going to have a fun and successful year together.  On our first day we got to know each other, had a meeting with the principal, had our first fire drill, and wrote about our second grade hopes. Here are some pictures of work done on the first day.  Our "Masterpiece Wall" is already looking great!
