Reminders

• The FW Spring Carnival is coming up on March 11th.  The third grade basket being donated to the carnival raffles needs some more items.  Please send in any "Game Day" items for our basket by this Friday.  Some items might include a board game, deck of cards, puzzle, or word search/crosswords.
• Summer School Camp paperwork is coming home today.  Please take a moment to read and consider if any of these camps would be beneficial for your child this summer.  The LEGO science camp seems like it may be interesting to try out!
• MCAS testing will be coming soon.  Here are the dates for 3rd grade.  Please try to avoid vacations during this time.
• ELA MCAS- April 4th, 5th, and 6th
• Math MCAS- May 9th and 10th
• Progress reports will be going home on Monday, March 13th.

Updates

• Weather and Climate-  Our science/writing topic has been weather and climate.  Students have spent a lot of time collecting data, reading charts and graphs, and evaluating information to learn about Burlington's weather and climate.  Now, we are researching another city in the US to find out about the climate and weather you would find there.  
• In math, we have been reviewing addition and subtraction strategies.  Students have been estimating, rounding, and learning mental strategies to add and subtract.  Our next unit will help us become more fluent with adding multi-digit numbers by using place-value and other strategies.
• In Social Studies we have been reading and discussing the Puritans.  This group of colonist settled in the Boston area after the Pilgrims.  Please ask your child what we have learned about them so far.
• In reading, most classes are working on informative writing with the weather and climate project.  We are also working on comprehension strategies such as Author's purpose, point of view, character analysis, and making connections.
• Read Across America- Thursday March 2, the entire school celebrated Dr. Seuss's birthday by having many different visitors and celebrations.  All week, classes have been reading Dr. Seuss books, decorating doors for a school contest, listening to guest readers, and having fun with rhymes and tongue twisters.
• Wee Deliver was a huge success.  The third graders delivered 2596 letters throughout the building in just a few days!
