Writing to Instruct

This week we are learning how to write step by step instructions.  Students have been turning their amphibian facts into an instruction or step in our procedural text, "How to care for an amphibian." We also discussed action words that could be used to start each step of our writing.  Today we made a material list for our final writing piece.

Amphibian research

.We have started our research on amphibians this week!  Students are researching amphibians to help us with our question, How to care for an amphibian?  Students are using books, posters, videos, online articles, websites, and our live toad to learn more about these animals.  Our final project will be books or posters on how to care for an amphibian pet.  This will be procedural writing or writing to instruct.  Thank you to the Burlington Science Center for providing us with the resources and for the toad to help us learn.

Hour of Code

Our class started participating in "Hour of Code" today.  This is a global event happening is schools all over!  Students are getting a chance to experiment with coding.  We watched an introductory video starring many famous computer programmers including Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, and many more.  The students were very excited to test out their coding abilities.  We will hopefully have some more time this week and this year to continue these fun coding tutorials.  Here are some pictures from our coding fun!

D.A.R.E

Today we had a visit from Officer Cross.  He is Burlington's D.A.R.E officer.  He talked to the kids about  strangers vs. trusted adults.  They learned a 3 word phrase to help them remember to stay safe.  "No, Go, Tell!"  
Please talk to your kids and see what they learned today.  This lesson is very important.  You may even want to do a "stranger drill" with your kids at home.  It may be  a good idea to make sure your child knows his or her address and a phone number to get in contact with you.  Hopefully, they will never need to use these strategies, but it is always great for these kids to be prepared for situations that may occur.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday!  I can't believe the holiday season has arrived so quickly!  Progress reports will be coming home on December 1st.  Conferences are going on that week with most being on December 4th.
