Pumpkin Science

Mr. Musselman came to visit Francis Wyman today to teach us all about pumpkins, jack-o-lanterns, and fire.  We learned the parts of a pumpkin, that a pumpkin floats in water, three materials are needed to make fire (fuel, heat, and oxygen), and we got to see a very cool experiment.
Ask your child today what happened!!!

Will the pumpkin SINK or FLOAT?

It FLOATS!

Mr. M shows us the parts of the pumpkin.

The Jack-o-lantern and fire triangle.

Completed fire triangle

Thumbs up= fire will go out.  Thumbs down + fire will stay lit.

"The fire will go out because the oxygen will run out inside the pumpkin."

The EXPERIMENT!

WOW!
Pumpkin Explosion!

The crowd goes WILD!

Bus Safety

Officer Schilpeletti from the Burlington Police Department came to school to talk to us about being safe at the bus stop, on the bus, and in case of an emergency on the bus too.  Students learn to stay in a line away from the street, walk on the left hand side of the street if there is no sidewalk, safely board the bus and choose a seat quickly, sit quietly while bus is moving, and the bus driver is in charge.  We practiced exiting the bus in case of an emergency.  I hope all students are following theses safety rules on the bus everyday!

Students Becoming Authors

Your children have impressed me in many ways the past couple of weeks.  First, their knowledge of trees has gone above and beyond my expectations.  Children are excited about new facts, thrilled to see a new type of leaf or seed, and enthralled with making their tree book on the iPad.
I am also impressed by the skills my class has on the iPad.  They have been teaching me tricks and tasks on Book Creator, Drawing Pad, AirDrop, and Reflex Math.
Here are some pictures of the students creating their first nonfiction text about trees.  They have been working hard to use images from our tree walk to create a book that would show me what they know about trees.  Be sure to check out the different formats each student has created for his or her own book.  They are coming out "tree"mendous!!

Tree Walk

Yesterday, the scientists of room 212 got to use their iPads to observe the trees in the plaground at Francis Wyman.  Ms. Pavlicek asked the students to use the camera application to examine the trees in the schoolyard.  Student took pictures of the whole tree, the leaves, seeds, and bark.  These pictures and student observations, helped them to determine what type of tree they were studying.
Today we started our first e-book.  Students are using the Book Creator application to incorporate pictures and facts to show me what they have learned and know about trees.
Here are some pictures from the tree walk... Check back for pictures of the students making the books, and eventually I will learn how to post some of their books here as well!

iPads are here!

The second grade has received the iPads and we have started using them in homerooms this week.  Mr. Schersten came to our class to help us learn the rules and he taught us (including Mrs. Boucher) some new helpful tricks!  If you have an iPad at home, your child could probably teach you a few handy tricks too!
Next week we will start bringing the iPads to reading class as well.  We have a lot of activities and lessons already planned to use these iPads.  My students have started a list of applications for me to try out and get to know.  I can't wait to get started.  Here are some pictues from Mr. Schersten's visit and from Friday's math lesson.

Trees!

We are coming to the end of our tree unit, and students are becoming tree experts.  We have practiced making a tree diagram with labels, students used leaf rubbings to examine simple and compound leaves, we learned the difference between deciduous and evergreen trees AND why leaves change color, and next week Ms. Pavlicek will take us outside with our iPads to inspect the trees on our playground. Here are some examples of the work we have done so far!
