Ms. Pavlicek came this afternoon to talk to us about snakes. After a quick snake lesson, we got to watch the snake eat. This is such a neat treat! The snake is a corn snake named Mican. Here are some picture from her visit with our class!

Reptile or Amphibian Project
It is time for our first second grade project! Your child will be bringing home his or her project folder this afternoon. Please go over the project with your child and help them make a plan.
Step 1: Choosing an amphibian or reptile to study. Be specific. Not just a turtle, but a leatherback or snapping turtle. It is our hope that by Monday January 28th, everyone will have chosen their animal to study.
Step 2: Start researching the animal. They can use books, internet, magazines, etc. They should be looking for the information on the Investigation Log, 2 interesting facts, and information about the animal's habitat.
Step 3: Find a shoe box, gift box, shipping box, or even tissue box. This box will become a diorama of the animal, its habitat, and the interesting facts.
Step 4: Create the diorama using whatever you have. Some students have used clay, legos, fish tank materials, construction paper, foam, etc. It should just look like a 3D representation of the animal where it would normally live. Have fun with it!
There is a rubric in the packet. If they follow the rubric, they will do a great job!

New Visitor
Crush is here to help us learn about reptiles. He is a baby snapping turtle from the Burlington Science Center. We have been able to touch him, hold him, feed him, and observe his behavior. We are so lucky to have the science center in town. We can have the animals in our room as we are learning about them.

Happy New Year!
Welcome back to the routine of school, homework, and reading every night! I hope everyone is well rested and ready to get back to work.
We have started our telling time initiative this week and most students have been wearing their watches. We have been trying to guess the approximate time before looking at the watch this week. I am trying to get them to at least have an idea of ABOUT what time it would be during the school day.
We have been asking teachers in the town to check for old watches around the house. If you have any extra/ old kid watches around the house, please donate them to our cause. Many students still don't have a watch to wear to school.
Don't forget to ask your child often, "What time is it?"
